Center for American Progress- Who Is Rupert Murdoch? sticky icon

-By Judd Legum, Christy Harvey

July 16, 2004-In recent years, Australian-born billionaire Rupert Murdoch has used the U.S. government's increasingly lax media regulations to consolidate his hold over the media and wider political debate in America. Consider Murdoch's empire: According to Businessweek, "his satellites deliver TV programs in five continents, all but dominating Britain, Italy, and wide swaths of Asia and the Middle East. He publishes 175 newspapers, including the New York Post and The Times of London. In the U.S., he owns the Twentieth Century Fox Studio, Fox Network, and 35 TV stations that reach more than 40% of the country...His cable channels include fast-growing Fox News, and 19 regional sports channels. In all, as many as one in five American homes at any given time will be tuned into a show News Corp. either produced or delivered." But who is the real Rupert Murdoch? As this report shows, he is a far-right partisan who has used his empire explicitly to pull American political debate to the right. He is also an enabler of the oppressive tactics employed by dictatorial regimes, and a man who admits to having hidden money in tax havens. In short, there more to Rupert Murdoch than meets the eye.

Ann Coulter tears the mask off FOX

August 9, 2012- Oh Ann, now look what you've done. Not only have you given away the store, you got Sean to help. True, he did it unwittingly, but what did you expect? We all know he's not as bright as you are.

The hyperthyroid harpie's recent tirade against Mitt Romney and his campaign has gotten a lot of attention for the way she clawed at his spokesmodel. But I think there is another point here that deserves everyone's attention.

Watch what Ann shouts at 00:35, while Hannity desperately tries to get her back on message after she tells the handful of big money donors bankrolling this whole carnival of clowns they should cut off their funding for Romney:

Pirates! Rupert Murdoch Rails About Obama, Google and Silicon Valley

January 14, 2012- On Friday, Rupert Murdoch and his top executives gathered for a daylong private confab in Las Vegas to think big thoughts about digital stuff. I’m guessing there wasn’t a session entitled “How Great is Google?”

On Saturday, the News Corp. CEO used his new Twitter account to rail against the search giant, call it a “piracy leader,” and gripe that it had too much influence in Washington, and the White House, in particular. (Here we need to remind you that News Corp. owns this Web site.) Business Insider has all four of his “Internet makes me angry” tweets (Update: He’s back at it! More below), including the one he deleted, but here are the two relevant ones:

Protect Our Elections Asks FBI To Expand Its Investigation Of NewsCorp To Include Its Relationship With US Chamber Of Commerce

On August 14, 2011, Protect Our Elections attorney Kevin Zeese wrote a letter to the FBI asking that it expand its investigation of NewsCorp to include (1) its million dollar donation to the US Chamber of Commerce to gut the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in order to cover up, obstruct and undermine an investigation under the FCPA, and (2) a conspiracy with the Chamber to use private investigators, military intelligence contractors, and law firms to spy on Americans and organizations that they consider threats, either on political, financial or ideological grounds.

Murdoch is the Orwellian Vision of Our Time, a Direct Threat to the Survival of Democracy

Originally blogged by Mark Karlin of Buzzflash

July 14, 2011- Sometimes, we are so caught up with battles over survival issues - such as jobs, Medicare, Social Security and health insurance - that we forget that the larger frame of political conversation is being shaped elsewhere.

Rupert Murdoch's Fox "News" in America not only serves as the farm team for GOP presidential and other Republican contenders, but it is also the most powerful news force in shaping the terms of our national political debate. Through a combination of "catapulting the propaganda" (thank George W. Bush for that phrase), contributions to US politicians, and targeted media attacks on "opposition" political figures - among other nefarious strategies - Murdoch has done more to bolster the current climate of plutocracy in the US than any other individual.

Murdoch specializes in using the media to deceive a primarily white, middle and working class into hot button, emotional perceptions of reality, based on false information and disciplined message points.

Senators Urge Inquiry into Whether Alleged Bribes of Police Officials May Have Violated Foreign Corrupt Practices Act

July 13, 2011

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and John D. (Jay) Rockefeller IV (D-WV), Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, called on Attorney General Eric Holder and Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro to investigate whether News Corporation, which is incorporated in the United States, violated United States law in allegedly bribing police officials to gain access to private telephone information and records.

The allegations, if true, may constitute a violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which prohibits corrupt payments intended to influence any act or decision of a foreign official.

Additionally, there are troubling reports that News Corporation may have illegally accessed phone records of victims of the 9/11 attacks, and the Senators urged authorities to investigate whether any United States citizens had their privacy violated by this alleged hacking.

Press Release: Senator Robert Menendez Calls for DOJ Investigation of News Corp.

Menendez Calls for DOJ Investigation into Reports that Murdoch Tabloid May Have Hacked 9/11 Victims’ Phones

July 13, 2011

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) sent a letter today to Attorney General Holder today encouraging him to thoroughly investigate accusations made by a British lawmaker that News International, a British subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, had hacked into the phones of 9/11 victims.

“The U.S. government must ensure that victims in the United States have not been subjected to illegal and unconscionable actions by these newspapers seeking to exploit information about their personal tragedies for profit,” Senator Menendez wrote.

Mr. Murdoch’s newspapers have already been accused of numerous illegal activities including intercepting and deleting the phone messages of a young girl, Milly Dowler, who disappeared and was later found murdered. Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has accused one newspaper of hiring criminals to gather personal information about his personal finances and his family.

Scotland Yard is currently engaged in an investigation which reportedly includes a list of 3,870 names, 5,000 land-line phone numbers and 4,000 cellphone numbers that may have been hacked.

Think Progress: Tell the Department of Justice To Investigate Rupert Murdoch Now

Allegations that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation bribed police officers and tapped phones, both abroad and potentially in the U.S., may violate U.S. law. We are sending the letter below to Attorney General Eric Holder and SEC Chair Mary L. Schapiro demanding a full and immediate investigation into any potential illegal acts by News Corporation and their subsidiaries.

Attorney General Holder:

We are writing to express our concerns of potential corrupt practices by News Corporation. Specifically, there are credible reports that News Corp subsidiaries bribed police officers to obtain information about former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and others. Further, there are reports that News Corp subsidiaries hacked into voicemails of politicians, celebrities and murder victims. Some of this activity may have even occurred on U.S. soil. Although initial reports focused on the UK paper News of the World, recent reports suggest that this disturbing conduct extended to several other News Corp properties.

Given the seriousness of these allegations, we ask that you immediately begin an investigation of all entities controlled by News Corp, including domestic subsidiaries such as Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post.
